Hi.

Cheers to a life well lived. Dare, create, go, see, live — this is why we created this blog. Hailing from sunny San Diego, follow us on our adventures!

90's rock Filipino Cover Band: Hong Kong

Two days in and out of Hong Kong.  Go!  And go we did.  Literally, we went non-stop to make the most out of the short time we had in this great city.

We were told that we should stay on Hong Kong Island and found this great hotel called the Dorsett Wanchai, which was super fancy (but affordable) and in a terrific location.  After checking into the hotel, the first order of business was to try some amazing food!  After some delicious noodles and cha shu bao (steamed buns with meat inside), we started wandering the city.

Randomly there was the Hong Kong Flower Show 2017 that was happening, so when in Hong Kong...  We went in and it was PACKED.  Which, I was finding out Hong Kong is just so densely populated that most places are almost always busy.  Of course the flower show had built up quite an appetite (it didn't, but when you are in a city known for its food, we decided we should eat some more).  So we went to find some Ramen and it was glorious.  We were fighting jet lag so we decided to go to Hong Kong Times square, which on a Friday night was jammed with people. We stopped off to have some drinks at a craft beer bar which was lively and very hip.

The next day we got an early start and took the Star Ferry to the Ocean Terminal.  It was only a short 10 minute ride but it had beautiful views of Hong Kong Island and all the high rises (see the first photo).  I highly recommend it. After we got back to Hong Kong Island we went to the Peak Tram.  The Tram has been opened since 1888, so there is a lot of history!  Once you get to the top there is the Peak Tower with shops and places to eat and the Sky Terrance which should have beautiful views of the city.  I say "should" because it was cloudy and cold on the day we were there so we didn't see anything [insert debbie downer sound here].

Of course all this adventuring made us hungry so we went in search of dumplings.  I am going to start off by saying, I am not food blogger, I don't take pictures of my food at restaurants -- that is just not me.  Well, it wasn't me until I had Xiaolongbao or soup dumplings in Hong Kong.  They are my FAVORITE -- you know the ones were you bite the top part off to add soy sauce and ginger.  I am pretty sure that if I lived in Hong Kong, I would only eat soup dumplings every day, all day.  Anyway, here my dumpling photo -- you know the one I NEVER take, ha.

I don't think you could spend enough time in Hong Kong to really experience all it has to offer, unless you lived there.  We were getting ready to catch a flight the next day, so Saturday night was it.  We were still fighting jet lag but we rallied -- we were going out!  You maybe asking yourself, why is the title of this blog entry called, "90's rock Filipino Cover Band"?  Well we met up with a guy my friend knows who is living in the city and very early on in the evening he asked us, "Do you like live music?  What about Filipino cover bands singing 90's rock?"

I like live music but Filipino cover bands -- I wasn't sold.  Oohh was I wrong.  We met up in Lan Kwai Fong, a fun party area of HK.  We cruised around, had drinks at few bars, it was beautiful and trendy and it was the place to be seen.  However, the local we were with, asked us if we wanted to go to Wanchai.  Not knowing anything of the nightlife we said, sure.  Best decision of the night.  At this point we were game to see what the city had to offer in terms of shenanigans.

We went to this bar that had live music, yep you guessed it.  It was a Filipino Cover Band.  As a child of the 90's, I loved the music.  Picture this: you are in HK on a Saturday night, in a bar with a great vibe, it's packed with people, you have had a few drinks, great band playing awesome dance music from the 90's.  Yep.  It was super fun, whenever I think of my time in HK, I think of that night.

Not the greatest quality -- but it captures the essence of the night in HK.

So that is how we rounded out our time in Hong Kong.  Of course, the next morning was a struggle, but you gotta "Pay the Piper" and it was worth it.  So there you have it: two days in and out of Hong Kong.
