Surfing adventure in Sri Lanka

Surfing adventure in Sri Lanka

All the magazines say that Sri Lanka is the next and upcoming travel destination.  But that is not why I went.  Actually I went because it was an hour flight from the Maldives -- it was geographically located in a good location.

Isn't that sad?!?!  Sri Lanka has some great surf, but my mind was set on my next destination -- not the experience in between.  Sri Lanka is so culturally diverse and has a lot of great food, beaches and some of the nicest people.  Tourism is rapidly growing and will definitely change the feel of the country, so if you plan on visiting -- I would recommend doing it soon.

We decided to go to Weligama which is two hours by car from the capital, Colombo.  It is a tiny city that for travelers, is the "it" spot for surfing.  It is a pretty sleepy city and beach, however they were just finishing the massive new Marriott when we were there, so the beaches might not be so quiet anymore.

Transport from the capital to Weligama was really expensive!  It was about US $100 for a two hour car ride.  It seemed comparatively more expensive than the hotel stay which was about US $60 per night.  Since we were not there for too long, we hired a private car to get back to the capital -- we "flash packed".  Check with the hostels which typically have some cheaper options.  If you have more time, I hear the train is a good option too.

There is a small hostel/hotel called Good Story - Neptune Resort right on the beach where we stayed.  It is perfectly located for surfing.  You walk out and the backyard opens up to the ocean.  To your left there is a local stand to rent surfboards for US $2 an hour.  Randomly the hotel has surfboards all over the compound, but unless you are taking surf lessons with them, you can not use them or rent them (?).

Surf was pretty fun while we were there, nothing too crazy big, in the 2-4ft range.  Although we were staying at Good Story, I spent the majority of my time down the road at a Hostel called Hangtime.  They had good, cheap food and their wi-fi seemed to work with work my phone.  Also it just seemed more chill and friendly.  They have this great upper level "restaurant" that looks out onto the ocean and these killer fruit smoothies that are delicious!

Spending an afternoon at Hangtime hostel was my favorite after surf session activity.

Weligama has some really great food options too.  One place we went to frequently was W15, the four star hotel located next to Good Story.  It is really modern and has an extensive menu.  They offered various options ranging from traditional dinners such as different types of curries to chicken sandwiches.  W15 also had some really great drinks, perfect for sipping while watching the beautiful sunsets.

We only explored such a small part of the country but any chance that I have, I will return.  There is so much to see and do -- there just isn't ever enough time!
